Elected to the Oakland Mills Village Board -- Twice!!
The next logical step for a "Columbia" activist is to run for a position on their local "Village Board." For non-Columbians, these are like mini home-owner associations. In 1975, Trent ran for a seat on the Oakland Mills Village Board of Directors, and won (this being a non-partisan election). In 1976, she ran for re-election and earned the highest vote total of any candidate, earning her the co-chairmanship of the Board.
The 1976 -77 Oakland Mills Village Board accomplished a lot. For example, they: • Created and held the inaugural Oakland Mills "International Food Festival" that continues to this day. • Created, developed and ran the Village Craft Shop in The Other Barn, for many years. (Although many others made this happen, the idea for this use of the space was Trent's.) • Created and held the "Rouse Roast" in 1976 and the "Ed Cochran (County Executive) Roast" in 1977. Trent worked on both and participated as a "roaster" in the Ed Cochran event. For those of you who have been around since that time, you may enjoy her remarks from that evening.
