Trent Oliver: Marine! . . . uh, Political Activist!
Trent graduated from Virginia Tech in a timely manner and began the first of her many careers. Yes, in the summer of 1967, Louise Trent Oliver enrolled in theMarine Women Officer’s Training Program. Halfway through the 10-week program, she read a motto describing a Marine as "an ordinary person with extraordinary determination". Our modest candidate decided that the motto was backwards for her. . . so she politely (and legally) resigned, earning an HonorableDischarge, one of her little-known accomplishments. . .

Having no immediate back-up plan, Trent decided to volunteer for her first political adventure -- managing the Catonsville Republican Headquarters during the 1968 Presidential election. For those of you who may not recall the 1968 election, Republicans in Maryland actually WON!
• Richard Nixon was elected president; • Maryland’s own Spiro Agnew became Vice President; • Mac Mathias won his race for Senator; and • J. Glen Beall was elected to Congress for the first time.
Apparently, the success of the Republicans that year gave Trent a mythical belief in the strength of the Republican Party in Maryland, and she has been hoping and working and even expecting, to experience a repeat performance ever since.
